Abandoned Well Sealing Program
Illinois Ag Department Launches Program to Cap Unused Wells and
Protect Ground Water
The Illinois Department of Agriculture has brought together public and private
agencies to address a potential hazard that threatens the safety of drinking water---
the improper abandonment of unused water wells.
The agencies, which include the Illinois Department of Public Health, County Soil
and Water Conservation Districts and the Illinois Water Well Sealing Coalition
have developed a new program to protect groundwater from contamination.
Abandoned wells, when left open, can lead to injury or death of children, animals
and even adults. An unsealed or improperly sealed well can be a direct conduit of
contamination form surface sources of pollution to groundwater. These unsealed,
adandoned wells represent both an environmental and a legal liability for the
property owner.
The Marion County Soil and Water Conservation District is participating in the
program by offering technical assistance to county residents. Stop by the District
office at 1550 E. Main in Salem or call (618)548-2230 to speak with our
Resource Conservationist, Burke Davies. Davies will be happy to provide
information and answer your questions on the proper sealing of abandoned wells.
